ABOUT THIS JOB
We are seeking a highly qualified research scientist to join our R&D team and contribute to the development of genetic and metabolic engineering strategies applied to microorganisms with biocontrol potential. The professional will be responsible for the construction and characterization of genetically modified microbial strains, focusing on the creation of innovative products to combat agricultural pathogens and pests. The candidate will have access to Symbiomics’ culture collections and technological platform, aiming to develop disruptive biological products alongside a highly skilled team. Their role will be centered on:
- Design, develop, and apply tools for precision genetic optimization and heterologous/homologous gene expression in model and non-model microorganisms.
- Outline and implement different genetic modification strategies to modulate metabolic pathways in model and non-model microorganisms with a focus on pathogen biocontrol.
- Design vectors for genetic modification and gene expression (heterologous/homologous) in microorganisms using multiple genetic engineering strategies.
- Identify and modulate metabolic pathways involved in the production of bioactive metabolites.
- Perform phenotypic and functional characterization of modified strains, including in vitro and in planta
- Contribute to the implementation of new Molecular Biology technologies, including hands-on laboratory work and data analysis, as needed.
- Assisting teams in daily activities to ensure high standards of scientific quality and compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), protocols, and safety principles.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including Microbiology, Molecular Biology, and Bioinformatics, to execute projects.
- Maintaining organized and detailed records of protocols, experiments and results.
- Contributing to the company’s success with new insights and ideas!
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
- Msc and/or PhD in a relevant field to this position (Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology or related fields, or professional experience in any of these areas. (Just show us that you know your stuff!)
- Proven hands-on experience with genetic engineering techniques, including genetic editing (homologous recombination, CRISPR etc.), cloning, and heterologous/homologous expression.
- Ability to develop and apply molecular tools for genetic engineering of model and non-model organisms.
- Experience in vector design and validation, as well as cloning systems.
- Experience with procedures of bacterial handling, storing and reactivation.
- Strategic planning skills and ability to solve problems, critical thinking, and sense of autonomy.
- Knowledge of general procedures and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) involving Microbiology and Molecular Biology.
- Strong communication skills, teamwork, and an innovative mindset.
It’s a plus:
- Experience with genome editing of non-model microorganisms.
- Knowledge and experience in microbial metabolism and modulation of biosynthetic pathways and gene expression regulation.
- Experience in the design and assembly of synthetic gene circuits engineered to program and control cellular functions (Synthetic Biology).
