ABOUT THIS JOB

We are looking for a professional to join the Biological Nitrogen Fixation team and work on the development of next-generation biological products to improve plant nutrition and tolerance to environmental stresses. The candidate will have access to Symbiomics’ microbial culture collections and platform to assist in the design and validation of new products that increase crop productivity while helping to lower the excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers in agricultural practices. The ideal candidate has experience in gene editing and agricultural microbiology tools. Their role will be centered on:

  • Designing, optimizing and performing precision gene editing techniques to non-transgenically engineer bacteria for enhanced nitrogen fixation and release capability.
  • Planning, optimizing and executing molecular microbiology-based methodologies for the isolation and characterization of wild and genetically modified nitrogen-fixing microorganisms.
  • Contributing to the implementation of novel technologies and process improvement within Molecular Biology, including performing bench work and data analysis as required.
  • Assisting in the planning and execution of bacterial inoculation assays in plant systems as well as in vitro assays.
  • Preparing materials for molecular microbiology related assays and other experiments.
  • Assisting teams in daily activities to ensure high standards of scientific quality and compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), protocols, and safety principles.
  • Ensuring adequate laboratory conditions, including equipment, supplies, solutions, sanitation, and quality programs.
  • Maintaining organized and detailed records of protocols, experiments and results.
  • Contributing to this startup’s success with new insights and ideas!

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

  • Msc and/or PhD in a relevant field to this position (Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology or related fields, or professional experience in any of these areas. (Just show us that you know your stuff!)
  • Experience with procedures of bacterial handling, storing and reactivation.
  • Broad, hands-on experience with cloning techniques, sequencing technologies and DNA-based analysis.
  • Experience in the design, optimization and execution of precision gene editing and genotyping technologies.
  • Ability to work with Molecular Biology softwares.
  • Strategic planning skills and ability to solve problems, critical thinking, and sense of autonomy.
  • Knowledge of general procedures and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) involving Microbiology and Molecular Biology.

It’s a plus:

  • Proven practice in handling microorganisms capable of promoting plant growth, especially nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
  • Experience with genome editing of non-model microorganisms.
  • Experience in the design and assembly of synthetic gene circuits engineered to program and control cellular functions (Synthetic Biology).
  • Experience in plant inoculation assays and evaluation of plant-associated beneficial microorganisms, especially diazotrophs.
